In daylight, the gardenia looked immaculate—white petals, glossy leaves, everything composed. But the air is warmer now and the flower has changed. Its scent has thickened, filling the room rather than simply decorating it.
Somewhere nearby, an osmanthus tree is flowering. There is something almost apricot-like in the air: soft fruit, warm skin, a faint suede impression.
Then the shadows deepen.
